The J.C. Lore Oyster Company was one of the largest and most successful seafood‑packing operations in Southern Maryland. It was founded by Joseph C. Lore Sr. in 1888, during the height of the Chesapeake oyster industry. The company specialized in packing and shipping Patuxent River oysters, crabs, and fish.
Lore built his first Solomons packing house in 1922, but it was destroyed by the 1933 Chesapeake–Potomac hurricane. A new, larger facility was constructed in 1934, which still stands today and is now a National Historic Landmark.
