Hen Bluebill Duck Decoy by R. Madison Mitchell
A great looking hen Bluebill duck decoy by Madison Mitchell from Havre de Grace Maryland. All original condition. It has a wooden dow plug paced under the tail that was this hunters rig mark. I have had Canvasback, Black Ducks and Blubills with this same rig mark. These were hunted on the eastern shore of Maryland and were all early Mitchell decoys. From the 1940's.
Madison Mitchell was one of America’s most celebrated duck decoy carvers, known for his lifelike waterfowl sculptures that are now highly collectible. His decoys, carved in Havre de Grace, Maryland, are prized for their craftsmanship and artistry.
Born: 1901 in Havre de Grace, Maryland
Died: 1993
Mitchell was both a funeral director and a master carver. He began carving in 1924 when business at his family funeral home was slow.
Over a 60-year career, he produced tens of thousands of duck and goose decoys, earning the title “Dean of Havre de Grace decoy makers.”
His decoys are known for precise feather detailing and world-class painting techniques.
He carved in a small shop behind his funeral parlor, often teaching and employing younger carvers, ensuring his influence carried into future generations.
Today, his work is displayed in institutions like the Smithsonian.
Mitchell’s decoys are highly sought after by collectors.
